Yesterday, whilst walking home from the gym I passed an enormous and imposing Gothic built blackbrick cathedral---'church' would be an under statement; it resembles more a castle...one befitting a Roger Corman film---and thought to myself, "Churches are so lucky not to be taxed. IF they were, then this one would go the way of a bed-and-breakfast or museum before long to offset expenses."
It struck me, in that instant, that such big Catholic buildings would need to collect a Mac truckload of tithes and offerings to satisfy mortgage and land taxes, and how sweet it must be for them, and all religions, to be tax exempt.
We should tax religions
Funny, then, I should, so soon afterwards, come across this interview with Gore Vidal in which he shares his views on religion and Democrats.
All those American homeowners losing their homes might want to squirrel away a spot in their places of worship unless, of course, they're "spiritual" in which case they haven't a tax-exempt organized religion to which to turn.
