Skimpy reports of Malcolm Shabazz's murder
-
I was in Mexico when young Malcolm Shabazz was killed. However, I just now heard about it -- three weeks later. This is unbelievable. I flew into Mexico City on May 4th (and then traveled to the west coast) and Shabazz was beaten to death, presumably by extortionist waiters, on the night of May 9th. And this news I only happened to learn via The Christian Science Monitor article about last night's mass kidnappings in Mexico City. Unbelievable!
Yesterday I read about the (white)Arizona mother jailed in Mexico because of marijuana found under her bus seat (yesterday I travelled through Mexico on the bus!) and, before that, the sensational torture and gang-rape of Spanish tourists in Acapulco plus other similar crimes to other similarly pale skinned peoples...but nothing - nothing - about Shabazz. This could be me. Or someone who looks like me. Why does this not surprise me? I'm shocked as all hell but I'm not surprised. As I write, "Mexico kidnapping" is 'trending' on Yahoo.
Why? Because it does not concern black people.
At the risk of sounding selfish, maybe even racist, Ain't this a bitch!
This could be me. Or someone who looks like me
It is very easy for white people to caution, Don't play the race card; Like rich people extolling the virtues of humility and having-not to poor people. The news of Malcolm X's grandson's killing should have blazed across headlines, if only for that weekend. But not a peep did I hear and I'm here in the country, itself. Didn't come across a remark by President Obama in the Associated Press - but I'm convinced he's a lanky phony, anyway - didn't come across a 'trending' ticker-tape, didn't come across a social network meme, and I certainly didn't hear it mentioned by anyone in passing. This could be me. Or someone who looks like me. If I disappoint white friends or fans or casual readers over this, then simply go your way. And don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.
Methinks I've had my fill of this country. Pity. I so enjoy Puerto Vallarta. The living is easy, the weather is wonderful and I have several friends here. I have connections here. There's even a burgeoning theatre group I was looking forward to working with next season. But hang it. If Mexico is a corrupt country, then that means it is filled with corrupt peoples who, by no coincidence, guide their actions by corrupt thinking. And as a man habitually thinks, so he behaves.
sitting ducks in a sea of amnesiac eye-witnesses
A nation populated by cowards who only know fear and might means we're all sitting ducks in a sea of amnesiac eye-witnesses. There is absolutely nothing to stop what happens in Mexico City or Sonora or Sinaloa or Oaxaca or Acapulco or Queretero from happening in Vallarta. Nothing. Bet your bottom dollar that when it counts, cowards, those erstwhile smiling neighbors and friends, will see nothing, hear nothing, and sure as hell, will say nothing.
Somebody who looks like me mightn't make the news. But that doesn't save the misfortune from befalling someone who looks like YOU.

So...the First Lady don't got back?
-
I missed this news item (I don't have television in Athens) about a GOP somebody sneering about the First Lady's ample posterior...which, apparently, is not so ample after all...?
This rebuff comes courtesy of a website devoted to publishing photographs of Michelle Obama.
So...Michelle don't got back? They say the proof is in the picture (or was that pudding?)

The Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial (D.C.)
-
The new memorial sits on the Washington Mall between statues of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson and stands a huge 30 feet tall.
"...A stone of hope" is so much more than President Obama has turned out to be. Instead of laying down a standard of new shoes to fill the nation's first black president - just saying that still rings amazing - proves just how hard it is to match up to a giant of a man who was a helluva leader.
The new memorial sits on the Washington Mall between statues of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson and stands a huge 30 feet tall.
The statue depicts King emerging from a stone. The concept for the memorial was taken from a line in the "I Have a Dream" speech, which is carved into the stone: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Visitors to the memorial pass through a sculpture of the mountain of despair and come upon the stone of hope.

USA President in over his head

As any follower of this website knows -- and I know there are not many -- my pride in and support for President Obama is there; it is real, it is meaty, it is there. But, still, so is my wonderment at his achieving the highest office in the land, arguably the most powerful and influential seat in the world. And now that seat is meeting the ass of a black man...glory be!
How did this man -- this political nobody, one-term U.S. senator from the Midwest who grew up much of his childhood without a father and, not too much long afterward, without a mother, offspring of interracial love -- with a funny sounding and unquestionably foreign, nay, un-American name (oh shut up, it is) become United States President on his first run?? His very first try with less than ten years in Washington! No, he's not the only candidate to do so but, my, is it awesome and, for me, at least, mind-boggling!
But, yes, I think he's been "tapped" or chosen by the real Invisible Hand, the old world powers-that-be. This amounts to conspiratorial blahddy-blah, I know, but, still, it makes more sense than what "actually" happened...or he has one helluva beginner's luck! Oh I'm proud to say Barack Obama IS my president, the President of the United States; but he's in over his head.

A new smile on the face of establishment. (A Repeat)
-
At the local library several weeks back I bought a handful of books to read for fun. Being abroad makes me even more eager for reading ANYTHING that's in English. One of them was a political science text book The Irony of Democracy: An Uncommon Introduction to American Politics (fourth edition) by Thom. R Dye & L Harmon Zeigler. With an uncommon title like that I was hooked to see what lay behind the cover. It was published in 1978. Keep that in mind. The 10th Chapter (The Presidency in Crisis), in particular, however struck me as being very much about the "now."
Jimmy Carter figured prominently in the then-new edition and I was awed by what the authors laid out in the section "Jimmy Carter: A New Smile on the Face of the Establishment".
In that section of the book the authors proceed to argue that in 1976 established elites were very concerned with the public's noticeable declining trust in all things political; said elites undertook a makeover of the leadership structure by replacing old, "experienced" faces with fresh ones; that the makeover was purely cosmetic "and would include no fundamental changes in policies, programs, or values."
Starting to sound familiar?
Now, does this political analysis sound thirty years old to you?
So while the Camelot comparisons were lost on no one, perhaps we should actually be comparing President Obama to the unglamorous Carter.

Jimmy Carter figured prominently in the then-new edition and I was awed by what the authors laid out in the section "Jimmy Carter: A New Smile on the Face of the Establishment".
"James Earl Carter, Jr., is a political "outsider" who was catapulted in less than two years from a Plains, Georgia, peanut farmer to president f the United States. At first glance, Carter's meteoric rise from rustic obscurity to the nation's most powerful office would seem to demolish the elitist notion that leaders are selected from upper-class backgrounds or from the ranks of seasoned officeholders. But a closer examination of elite concerns in 1976--especially concern over declining public confidence in established elites themselves--together with Carter's reassuring, smiling, "we're -okay" style of politics--provides a better understanding of how and when an "outsider" will be selected for national leadership."

"The national news media paid little attention to Carter's December 1974 (Obama February 2007) announcement of his presidential candidacy...observers everywhere expected that established leaders----Hubert H Humphrey or Edward M Kennedy (Hilary Clinton & John Edwards)----would win the presidency in 1976 (2008)...However Carter knew the first two primaries were in New Hampshire and Florida (Iowa & New Hampshire). The first was a small state (Iowa) where he had two years to engage in face-to-face campaigning. These two early primary victories brought Carter recognition that he needed (Obama took first in Iowa, second in New Hampshire). Would either of the heavy weights, Humphrey or Kennedy (Al Gore), enter the race and take the prize away from Carter. Carter avoided specifics on issues, and campaigned on charm, decency, and brotherly love...described himself as 'a farmer, an engineer, a businessman, a planner, a scientist, a governor, and a Christian' (biracial, community organizer, scholar, outsider, Christian)...His choice of Walter Mondale (Joe Biden) as vice presidential running mate assured liberals that he was not a southern populist (elitist naive northern populist)...he emphasizes his humble beginnings. Carter brought a new down-home image into national politics [but] stuck closely to established liberal remedies for society's problems: social programs for the poor and aged; civil rights commitments for blacks (homosexuals); jobs for the unemployed; federal aid for cities (bailout monies); tax 'reform' (health care reform)....
Jimmy Carter's rapid rise to national leadership, and his welcome into top elite circles, represents still another tactic available to an embattled elite----replace the old faces associated with past defeats and humiliations with smiling new faces promising honesty, compassion, and good times (Yes We Can! 2008)."
Now, does this political analysis sound thirty years old to you?
So while the Camelot comparisons were lost on no one, perhaps we should actually be comparing President Obama to the unglamorous Carter.

U.S. lawmakers reject pullout from Afghanistan
-
Bless his soul, Dennis Kucinich, is a Washington Democratic politician who actually has one. A soul/conscience/moral compass, that is. Yesterday, the congressman presented a bill to the House calling for damn near immediate withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. The bill was overwhelmingly rejected. Whoa. Defeat, yes, but also, in a bigger sense, a winner because the measure's rejection rammed home a reality check to many Americans: F*ck you! We, U.S. Congress, tell you how we want things to go.
So much for "govt for the people, by the people" illusion.
And so much for President Obama's big ass anti-war stance. He, as we were so often reminded during the campaign, voted against the Iraq War because he, as we were so often told, knew from the get-go it was a wrong, ill-conceived, and bogus confrontation. Yet, as President, Obama is more concerned with winning the goddamn tragedy than ending it. I don't think it is about oil so much as it is about his ego. He wants to show that he's tough and imposing. But he isn't; Obama is not a tough guy. He is a charming nerd.
Not only has President Obama gone forward with fighting in Afghanistan but now we know the Democratic controlled House of Representatives supports this war as well; a war which they so vehemently denounced up to twelve months ago.

Reality check to many Americans: F*ck you! We, U.S. Congress, tell you how we want things to goPresident Obama will not win this war because he is not a fighter, let alone a war president. He is absent of the hard-knuckle, sweaty, domineering toughness that strongmen and bullies, alike, possess that make others move when glanced or shouted at. He is void of any soldier or gangster skills. A man who forwent curriculum at any school of hard knocks as well as military training is far from the best strategist during war. But that's why the nation voted him United States President: to bring home the troops and use his Harvard U. intelligence to right the economy! His unsuitability to engage in war did not matter because we believed the man would not perpetuate the blunderous wars. Well!

Am beginning to doubt President Obama
-
Am beginning to doubt Obama
am beginning to doubt he can
bring about the change
that he promised all the land
His skills (hope) are yet forthcoming
his demands are still ever grand
but his convictions when tested
recede like footprints in the sand
Am beginning to see Obama
for the historical footnote he is
not a milestone. Or revolution;
or anything so cataclysmic
My black President Obama.
Oh what a wonderful fact!
Yet the man has never fought in his life
and in a leader that is a major lack
Am beginning to doubt Obama
am beginning to doubt the man
can do anything beyond
making promises again and again

Obama v. Alito (lost decorum)

From a shouted "You lie!" last year to a mouthed equivalent this year, by a Supreme Court Justice, no less, President Obama is left with little delusions about thriving bipartisanship. At this rate, next year they'll probably quietly file out or just sit and listen to their ipods. Odd how the Chamber was stoic during the Monkey's disastrous, biased and lying eight years.

Republicans: Racist & Retarded
-
The Republican Party has shown itself in the past two weeks to be so blindly racist and retarded that they will root against the United States of America just for spite. They really hate having a Negro as commander in chief. Remember, one of the first admissions of GOP bitterness came from, to borrow Senator Al Franken's book title, big, fat idiot Rush Limbaugh who publicly declared, "I hope Obama fails."
Wm. F. Buckley, Jr, Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater would have nothing to do with these hate-mongers.
Conservatives, who cast their lot with the Republican Party as if bound by an obligatory umbilical cord, express resentment and paranoia at EVERY thing the President does. When he addresses schoolchildren the conservatives cry, Brainwashing! When he confers with our allies the accusation is 'elitism'; when with our enemies, a sell-out. The go-it-alone cowboy diplomacy of W. gained us nothing but, hey, progress and cooperation are overrated.
Republicans want no loyalty paid to the President. (Un-American?) They want no civility paid to the President. (Disrespectful?) They lust for President Obama's---America's---failure just so they can squeal with retarded glee, We told ya so! And by extension, That's what ya git fer ilecking a smarty blacky! This is today's GOP; Wm. F. Buckley, Jr, Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater would have nothing to do with these hate-mongers.
Thankfully, these people (some prefer to call themselves birthers) do not travel abroad and, so, their willful anti-Americanism and hatred stays at home, sparing other peoples 1) a face to finally associate with a Bush voter and 2) the embarrassment of asking, Are you really American?

President Obama awarded Nobel Peace Prize
-
I was travelling on the autobahn this afternoon when the radio announced that President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. Not understanding German I doubted the driver translated correctly; but when I reached Berlin I rushed online and read the news: President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize.
Holy cow!
His detractors celebrated his failed campaign for us to host 2016 Summer Olympics---talk about "un-American"!---but let's see: Olympics host...Nobel Peace Prize...? Naw, there is no comparing the two. And the President didn't even campaign for this one!
2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jimmy Carter applauded the Committee for making a "bold statement of international support for his [Obama's] vision and commitment." Al Gore, 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner, echoed the accolades and support.
Eat that Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck.
here is a list of Peace Prize winners since 1980
